Title: Volleyball is the Olympics' most watched sport
Post by: Harvey on July 28, 2012, 07:27:17 pm
Beach and indoor are, by far, the most watched Olympic sports. More people watch these sports than the athletics or the swimming or the basketball. For those of you who want to see some ridiculous jumping, I'd encourage you to take a look at the USA beach team, in particular Phil Dalhausser. One of the best athletes in the world, IMO.

Can't wait to see world ranked 22 Australia cause some upsets in the indoor discipline. Who's keen for the volleyball? :p

is that true or did you make it up? my extremely brief google search showed that, based on the number of articles published about each type of event, the most "popular" summer olympics sport was athletics by a long way; volleyball was 16th. http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/olympics.htm (http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/olympics.htm).

not hating, i like watching volleyball a lot. have you seen viewership data? can you send it? i'm genuinely curious.

Somehow I think the popularity of beach volleyball has a bit more to do with the hot women in bikinis:

The combination of the two disciplines, indoor and beach combine to be the most viewed overall sport, I believe. At least, that's what I was told by the director of Volleyball Australia.

i see. well, i can't find anything on this and, despite my near-overwhelming desire to find viewership data broken down by sport, i have to stop. one of you fuckers without a job, go look this up.

by the metric in the article i linked to, beach and indoor combined would be the 7th-most-popular sport.

NO FUCKING WAY is voleyball the most watched olympic sport!

Im bored to look too , ill just do a fast google search...

10 minutes later:

Bullshit , there is only one childish written blog that claims the beach-volleyball in 2008 had astronomical numbers, without references at all.
All the other researches show the expected: track and filed is the king by FAR , then swimming and then a bunch of popular sports, basketball , football, gymnastics, almost equal. Beach voleyball is beyond #20.

It's common sense actually, who the fuck is this bald motherfucker? If he had to watch one of his games,  a USA-Spain basketball final, a Lachte vs Phelps swimming final , or the 100m/200m finals , would he even watch himself?
NO! :D

As others have pointed out it's very very very unlikely that this is true.  If volleyball is even in the top 5 it is due to women's beach volleyball and I doubt 90% of that audience cares what sport they're playing so long as they do it in bikinis.  No one gives a damn about men's volleyball.  Curling probably has a larger audience than men's vball.

Come on , you know i love exaggerating to a graphic point.  :P
I searched the guy before i posted the previous post, i know who he is and i highly respect ANY olympic athlete , even more the top ones like himself.
I am also sure the director knew what he was talking about, it just wasn't what harvey posted. Maybe it was local numbers in Australia , maybe it was the most watched event the day that it happened etc.
The thread topic remains hilarious!  :wowthatwasnutswtf:

I think he said specifically at the past two Olympics or something along those lines. Regardless of Olympic viewership, volleyball is the 2nd most 'popular' sport in the world and the largest in terms of people playing with over 50 million playing volleyball every week.

google is your friend , make a few obvious searches and see you are evidently wrong.

Here is a site that has many different studies on the topic:
http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/index.htm

There is indeed one study that finds volleyball the sport with the most participants but even the site owners AND the people that conducted the sruvey dish it:
http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/final.htm

Quote
Here is a list of the top 10 most popular sports, as discussed by Johann and Sandra. The ranking was based on the estimates of participants in the sport worldwide (based on 2002 figures). The data was provided by each of the International Sports Federations themselves, and so the method of counting participants may vary between each sporting federation. On their page, Johann and Sandra question the accuracy of some of the figures themselves.

This is the only list we have found that does not have Soccer/Football on the top of the list, and some of the ranks don't seem right. Dragon Boat Racing one of the world's most popular sports? I don't think so. There are millions of people who play soccer in the streets around the world, but as they do not play in any formal competition they would not be counted as 'participants'.

In olympic games particular:

http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/olympics.htm
volelyball #17 , beach volley #22

http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/ioc-website.htm
volleyball #5 , beach volley unlisted ( below #28 )

In your defence, volleyball has the most national federations:
http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/federations.htm

Now you have to find some data to back up this statement :

Beach and indoor are, by far, the most watched Olympic sports. More people watch these sports than the athletics or the swimming or the basketball.

So has anyone else wondered why we can combine viewership for volleyball and beach volleyball as if the 2 audiences are mutually exclusive but not the audiences of say the 100m, 200m + 400m or 400m dash and 400m hurdles to "definitively" say that Sprinting or 400M running is by far the most watched sport?
