Why there is more to football than speed and strength

Football is a skill, and must be practiced...the same as bball, If you are just athletic that may not be enough sometimes

take a look at dwain chambers, probably 4.3 in 40 since his 60m dash is 6.42 100m-9.97 and 200m 20.3
overall he is athletic but totally sucks at football...

If he sucks it's probably due to poor hand-eye coordination (catching).

His agility/change of direction/balance is not forced to be great neither.

He can certainly run & jump though. Like you say, just being athletic may not be enough sometimes, which is 100% true. Same goes for soccer.

Usain Bolt is talking about playing soccer when he quits track. He ain't doing fuk all in soccer if he doesn't have good technical ability.

Idk about Usain bolt though..he could play pro cricket and would be if he was not doing track..usain could be good at soccer

usain could be good at soccer.

Not if he can't pass, control, dribble, head a ball he ain't or tackle. Would need to develop better stamina too.

Couldn't see him playing for a good/top European team, no way.

of course, if football didn't require you getting your head knocked off at least once a game, dwain would be great at it.. bottom line, some people just can't take the contact, same goes for fight sports.. plenty of insanely skilled athletes enter fight sports, but end up on the floor lights out because they don't have the heart or chin to take shots.

it would help if dwain could catch a ball tho....

:D

agreed, which is a shame that so many high school kids focus solely on squat, bench, and maybe a little bit of conditoning. So much more goes into the game of football. If you are a skill guy, you should be out working on the intrinsics of your position, same with linemen.

A basketball player wouldnt simply spend a summer lifting weights, why would a football player?

Well if you are still in HS good for thinking critically about it. I know I wish i would have spent more times perfecting routes, catching passes, working on getting off ball, 1 on 1 break downs, pass rushing techniques ETC.

A ton can be mimicked without the use of pads/hitting, people just dont think critically and come up with drills, instead relying on weight training and a few passing tournaments every summer.

As I am a football player I know how much speed, strength, kick shots and power is required. This is the game where we used our full body except our hands. If by mistake while playing we touch the ball by hands it's comes as foul, and we get a yellow card for that as a warning.

I'm reminded of the phrase "Being athletic doesn't make you an athlete".

Technically, I don't know if that phrase works but you get the point.
My real name is Daniel. (6'5" - 217lbs.)
