Has anyone else read this one?

I'm just over halfway through and it's fascinating. Especially for anyone learning a new skill including things like lifting, running, jumping, etc.

Also like the info on talent hotbeds and the ignition factor. Makes me wonder whether we'll see more indigenous basketball players in Australia off the back of Patty Mills' performance in game 4.

Ok so I just googled Gladwellian...still not sure if positive or not. Depends on which website you reference.

From where I'm up to there's no real self help aspect...yet. What I've seen so far:

- Myelin responsible for acquiring skill- wraps nerve fibres creating more solid connection than unwrapped fibres
- The type of practice is most important for acquiring skill at greater speeds and levels (incl. motivation and desire to learn)
- Mistake driven practice most important
- Myelin is attributable to all skills and once wrapped doesn't unwrap (I'm assuming this is the old muscle memory thingy here)

Really is a fascinating read. I'm still 100+ pages from the end but don't expect to be disappointed with the finish.

Actually, acquiring skills is more of a Purkinje-cell function than anything. Yes, myelin is important to prevent signal loss (as electric signals jump from a point of de-myelinization to another, so the less there are, the faster the signal is and the little the loss is (the higher potential of a synapse occuring becomes).

It's interesting, but synapse occurrence in the nervous system is very, very low. This is by design so that only the true desired synapses occur (otherwise you'd have synapse pandemonium).

Also, myelin is recovered and strengthened during sleep.

I have planned an article about this very topic on my website but currently I'm busy continuing with the one-leg jump topic.

Acquiring is my wording and you're obviously much more familiar with this stuff than I am.

 The analogy that is used in the book is relating to internet connection with myelin providing a faster signal.

Either way it's a super interesting read and I'd recommend it even if I can't summarise accurately  :D

Actually there's pretty good preliminary evidence that myelin remodelling occurs in the adult CNS:

It's still interesting stuff, just be very wary of books that make broad claims on the basis of textbook generalisations of biological processes, the literature on those is always changing.

Yeah it's obvious but it's staggering how prevalent ignorance is when it comes to genetics. There are people out there who believe that race is nothing but a social construct and if you argue anything against the contrary you get called a bigot.

To my knowledge, myelin DOES unwrap, and that's why you need sleep. You need sleep to re-wrap the myelin (although, what exactly "wrap" stands for might be different for me and you).

It basically "deteriorates" and it is recovered during sleep, some new research would indicate.

Tbh i realized that race is retarded, ethnicity is more accurate. Me and Raptor may be of the same race, but there can be great variance between us because of our different ethnicities.

Compare English to Russian people.

Also, i noticed that USA seems to be obssessed with race whereas europe is more obssessed with ethnicity.

they're both socially constructed. and they can both be "accurate" within the social context from which they arose. like the dark-skinned guy who is african in the US, nigerian in england, and yoruba in nigeria.

the variance between you and raptor is not because you have different ethnicities, you have different ethnicities because you have different ancestries and culture. your ethnicity arises from your understandings of yourselves and each other, not the other way around. (and how different are your ethnicities, really? you're albanian, right? and he's romanian. your ancestral homes are like 500 miles from each other. you're both southeastern european. you and i, a northwestern european, are probably more different "ethnically" than you and raptor.)
