Harvey wasn't huge but it really wrecked Texas (Houston), they don't have to be big to be devastating.. but man o man Irma looks nuts:

second largest Hurricane (so far) recorded in the Atlantic.

harvey WAS huge(ly full of rain). broke the north american single rainfall record!

good luck over there, man. hope you've got the windows boarded/taped up and plenty of drinking water and batteries and shit. i guess in south florida most people have a hurricane kit ready during the season anyway. but irma looks nasty.
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

yeah for sure. I meant huge in a "category" sense. Harvey was devastating, but only a cat3 IIRC. With cat3's around here, people throw "hurricane parties" and such (stupid). But cat3's usually dump more rain and move through slow; Harvey literally hit them twice, that's absolutely nuts. BTW, you don't see the hurricane party vibe around here with cat5+, it's a totally different scene.

cat4/5+ is some insane stuff, but they move through quick. So these large category hurricanes, while devastating in the eye path, usually just move through really fast it seems.

The lower category hurricanes (3 and below) are slower, so they just sit around alot longer dumping TONS of rain.

I've been through a ton of hurricanes, the worst was hurricane Andrew by far, but we were just outside the eye. It literally ripped a shutter off of the house. Lots of peoples roofs flew off, not much in our area though. But, the entire time it felt like the roof was going to fly off. It was absolutely nuts. The sounds of the high speed winds never leave you, it's so scary yet impressive. But since it wasn't a direct eye hit, we were mostly ok.

I've been through several other hurricanes, much weaker (cat2/3) which were actually the worst. A few killed power for weeks, even nearly a month. Because they just hover over forever and dump tons of rain, while also having somewhat strong winds, which seems to be a horrible combo. They move through so slow.

thanks man! yeah we have pretty much everything, tons of water/food, and hurricane shutters.

Irma has me thinking of going to a shelter though... never thought about going to one before, but if it's going to look like a direct hit from cat5+, i'm thinking of heading somewhere. Not sure I want to ride out another cat5, that shit is a nightmare.

fwiw, I don't understand anyone who, year after year, boards up their windows. Obviously money is an issue, but hurricane shutters are so easy to put up & provide you with some serious peace of mind. Turns your house into a fortress - except for the roof. I'd never settle for boarding up windows & such, very risky in a huge hurricane. With shutters up, i've heard stuff hit the shutters that sounds like a MASSIVE impact. If those were boards, or just tape, you're in serious trouble. Some people don't secure stuff they have outside by bringing it in, creates thousands of lethal projectiles.

peace!!

Be careful adarq.

thanks man!

tomorrow morning, will have all of the hurricane preparations done - last set of shutters.

normally by now, these things start looking a little better for my area... but not with Irma. In fact, seems to be getting worse HEH!

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gVFeGLROmA" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gVFeGLROmA</a>

there's so many good videos out there, gives me better info than the MSM/Weather Channel.

As of right now, i'm going to ride it out. I also have my dad's motorcycle helmet in case I need it (if the roof pops off). I figure if the roof pops off, i'll go into the tub with the motorcycle helmet on. :ninja: :uhhhfacepalm:

I'm just north of Miami so, it will weaken SLIGHTLY by the time it hits my area. My aunt is in Miami but she lives in an apartment building that also servers as a "Nuclear Fallout Shelter" wtf? So that seems pretty sturdy .. but she's right on the Ocean. I've invited her over here but she wants to stay over there.

IMHO, this thing is going to be bad.. very bad. This hurricane is a wrecking ball.

Shelter is still an option if it's category 5, but I think it'll be a cat4 (HOPEFULLY).

peace!

thanks!

lots of people are evacuating but most aren't, it seems like. nah, the coastline of Broward is an evacuation zone, i'm ~12 miles from the coast which is outside that zone.

Damn bro stay safe, keep us updated. I think you're projected to be in that northeastern side of the eye right now which is the worst place to be. Hopefully it shifts in your favor.

According to that video above adarq posted, the eye of the storm will be in south florida then move it's way up collecting winds but will curve around.

Also article I found is ridiculous.

I'm actually a huge Snowstorm nerd so I hit up Wunderground to track big storms in the winter. They're legit and have meteorologists plus enthusiasts who track storms. A lot better to follow for updates than more commercial places like weather.com and accuweather.com.
