Pickup for 90 minutes

Was a great vibe, never hooped at this court before. We played full court games, hardly a minute to rest between games, didn't come off the court. It's great cardio! This will probably displace my weekly 10k run, i think that is a fair compromise unless i find a way to squeeze that in through the week sometime.

I can't even squat light after that, it's just 15 years of squatting has won away what I was born with. I think it's a OA at work, i had a doctor warn me about that in 2019 when I had my first and only serious knee injury. It seems I have to accept that now, i cant just ignore it anymore.

GPT tells me to do higher reps with lower weights, i will give that a shot. But def need to stay away from heavy squats now.

Sorry to hear that man. I've never thought heavy squats at low reps would contribute significantly to knee cartilage wear. I have barely kept up with sports injury stuff, but I would think that running, playing bball - activities with lots of repetitive knee loading - would be worse long-term for cartilage loss. Is it bad after playing ball?

Yeah, AGC you nailed it. The culprit was too much full court basketball. Since then i've stopped the sunday full court pickup and i'm starting to feel better. I squatted 90kg for a single yesterday (it felt like a max lol) - but compared to three weeks back when even the empty bar was too hard for 1 rep, i'm on my way back. Long term I just need to get back to my playing weight of 80-85kg and staying there. No more full court basketball except the weekly game on wednesday. Speaking of, today is the first one - which is exciting. Will update this post after the game.

I'm trying to work through this and learn a few things about energy systems. The goal is to improve my conditioning by being smarter and training better. I haven't got much training room to implement something new except the one sprint day i'm planning to add which I have avoided until I got in better shape (<90kg which is where I am at now)

OHP, Dumbell OHP and Chinups/pullups

Friday
Gym session: Deadlifts, RDL, Barbell rows
Track: Sprints / HIIT
Court session: followed by half court pickup or shooting practice

Saturday
Bench, DB bench, curls

Sunday
Treadmill run 1hr

I posted this on insta but i'm going to write something here as well. I'd love to get back to dunking again. It's a far cry, now it's a max effort to touch/grab the rim. I feel very slow and sluggish and look even worse. Backsquat is non-existent. It's a new challenge for me to increase vertical without the usual tools (squats). The first port of action is to get to 85kg bw, that will probably the most effective way to achieve the goal. But in the meantime I can also add some exercises which get me along the way while i'm dropping 5kg. Low level plyos (small box) + and regular jump session is what i'm thinking so far.

We had a bye this week, i found a game to fill in at the last minute - felt so good to have the chance to ball. The team was really cool, they were willing passers to me which I really enjoyed, but the usual problem of someone jacking up a shot seconds into the offence still applies. I dont know why people force shots, isn't it better to just move the ball around a bit even if you do end up jacking up a shot, at least you explored other possibilities first. Speaking of offense, i took zero shots - not one. I got a few nice assists, a few blocks, a few rebounds. It was my kind of scoresheet, i just haven't got the juice to play well on both ends - my conditioning only allows one of the two. But thats a cop out, I still had a few chances to take on the defence and I just passed out to the open man. Lol its' the right decision but the guy i was passing to was open for a reason.

Made some progress in rehab, i started doing some knee prehab stuff, it felt quite good, promising stuff.

Cool thing happened on sunday, i forced myself to do a sprint session. Not even planned or scheduled but I knew if I don't force the issue i'll just keep skipping sprints forever. SO i did it, and then having overcome that inertia decided I should sprint not just 1x a week but, let me sprint again tomorrow and thursday and ... yeah. lol. Figuring out yourself is half the battle.

I also did some jumps today and i was just maybe 2 inches short of the above goal which seems so out of reach. Sprinting man, it works. Also watch this space.
