Program Review / Re: Smolov Tips?
« on: December 26, 2011, 01:09:41 am »
make sure to warm up well before each session, stay mobile and flexible, if you start getting pain in areas play it smart, don't try to keep pushing through and through it.

possibly use a box of some sort each time you squat to make sure your hitting depth from session to session. It's easy to start trying to drive the lifts up and not realize your squatting much more shallow

I can't figure out if you're trolling or are actually serious about this. Why would anyone recklessly ignore the sensible, FREE advice you've been getting?

One day you'll be ready for this, but not yet. Increased injury risk is a huge reason for you not to do Smolov that hasn't been mentioned in much detail (although that's because of the incredibly obvious preceding reason, that you're not strong enough and are still a beginner). Given that you said you want to avoid injury, but you also want quick gains, just follow the advice of the other guys here, they clearly know what they're talking about. If nothing else, read the top line of the forum page header!!! INTELLIGENT TRAINING: a critical aspect of success, not reckless training that is unnecessarily tough and also increases injury risk.

(Although if the other posts haven't convinced you, then you're probably not even reading this thread anymore)

No, I'm reading it alright. But I'm still waiting for Smolov advice. If you want to lecture me about my poor decisions, PM me. Keep this on topic.

i'll give it a shot, throwing down some decent dunks now, working on a reverse off a lob and windmill off a bounce so i'll have some good ones when i get those when i get those.

Here's my first entry.. Rim is 10 ft, just gonna have to trust me on it. Its at a university gym, honestly no patience to go and measure it on camera

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWGUBnQW73M

Anyone up for doing a regular dunk contest online? Maybe every two weeks or monthly? Last few days of every contest people will vote on winners. Could make some rules or something up. You'd have to post legit measurements of the height of the rim you're dunking on, and you'd only enter 1 dunk per contest (that way you can enter/win multiple over time instead of wasting all your dunks for one contest).

Just a thought. We could iron out more details but just curious if anyone is interested.

yea there are def. some positives to it

its gets you pretty good at everything, master of nothing but for most ppl that works well, also pretty good for fat loss in terms of getting in lots of work burning lots of calories, stresses flexiblity, strength, explosive power, endurance, def. not the worst thing in the world. some of the stuff is out there, or just too over the top but there are lots of good things in crossfit

usually i think Poliquin's articles are interesting and informative

the main point of the article is dfferent people respond best to different types of training

article was weird though he assigned it to the 5 physical states in chinese medicine

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Re: Dancing

I wonder what tests they used for the motor skill development

LBSS,

Now you're creating a strawmen. I never said blacks were better dancers and I never said dumb people were better dancers. I said people thought to be highly intelligent that think a lot generally aren't good dancers (or good athletes). Make a list of the worlds 100 greatest thinkers and its relatively unlikely they were ever tearing it up on the dance floor at any age, with or without practice. Regardless of skin color. The evolution of the human brain particularly with regards to front brain development does help to explain why, if you link that with movement skills.

On another note you would do well to read "Global Bell Curve" by Richard Lynn.

Quote
There have been multiple studies showing that young males of west african descent (generally what is referred to in the US as "black") in the US tend to have lower body fat, perform slightly better on sprint and strength tests than their white counterparts etc...

And have better motor skill development at any given age.

i see what you guys are saying

with and without the ball are 2 different stories for me. if u watch in the vid the ones with i barely use a runup and can't get a good jump in cause it just feels akward

2 handed cleanly off the lob yea. i should be able to go 2 with ball though, not sure about the tomahawk
gonna start working more on my jump form though

I think you also have to take into account how much the jumper uses their arm swing to achieve max height.

Absolutely, but he gets just as high as me when we jump without the ball. Maybe I get higher with the ball though. Still, my point is that if he's able to dunk 2-handed cleanly, he should be able to tomahawk it as well (just barely, depends on how lucky you get with the ball in your hands in the perfect position).

reach is about 7 ft 11, 2 handed tomahawk would be pretty tough, need to get higher
will start working on from more now though

yea i used to look up at the rim, and it seemed so high, but now i look at it, and i think to myself, really , that's it. it's so low

^ Definitely more potential. I was VERY surprised to see your head that close to that 9'3" cushion on the backboard. Are you getting up 38"? Doesn't even look like that much because of the approach... you'll be at 40" soon.

Yea i guess it's about 37-38 on those jumps. Measured the foam quickly but it should be pretty accurate, because i remember measuring the foam in a different gym at my school and it was like 9 ft4. I'm thinking as well with good form and a really good jump i could probably hit 40 which would be insane

was not that interested in working on the form before because i figured let me get a lot stronger and everything first, but now that i have some decent strength and hops, i think it could benefit me a lot

What's your reach? If the measurements are correct, you jump as high as I do at my peak and I've thrown down a 2-handed tomahawk (ball on neck).

Work on your approach and tap into that potential :ibjumping:

Also, ineedtodunk, when I was first able to dunk it was very weird... I'd walk up to the rim and look at how high it is, and i'd think "I'm able to dunk on that? HOW?" it's weird as hell. Like you literally won't believe it's physically possible for you to dunk but you're able to do it. I don't know how else to describe it.

My story is similar, although I wanted to dunk before I finish high school and did it one week before I finished it.

In terms of your improvement, the compression was MUCH better when you made your dunks. You should, IMO, train with double leg bounds for length for a while. They will teach you to get deeper and compress and release better and consecutively. That will translate into better compression in your jumps after a while IMO.

There is so much more potential to jump higher right now if you'd get deeper in the plant and BE ABLE to get out of there quickly.

yea i kind of think the same thing, however i think part of the reason why i don't get deeper is that i swing my arms down as i go into the plant which raises me up a bit .
