Hey Kingfish, you told me to get some lifting shoes. When you switched shoes, did you immediately squat better or have you had to get used to it?

Would doing plyos help his vert?
I saw the difference between his running and standing VJ as sign of some decent reactive ability, so I didn't know how he would be able to improve his reactive ability. I guess I was way off, so he would see best gains with explosive lifts and maybe plyos?

if you don't perform athletic movements (reactive, explosive, plyo etc), then your ability to perform those movements will diminish even if your "lifts" are going up.. Everything is a skill, so, not improving your body's ability to absorb/produce force rapidly is lost with detraining of explosive/reactive movements. There is no reason to periodize explosive/reactive movements, they should ALWAYS be included in an athlete's training program, it's just the volume/intensity that changes based on the type of workout or block you are in.. so ya, if someone is performing ONLY heavy lifting yet is somehow (wtf) doing all of that for athletic performance improvement, they will lose the ability to absorb/produce force fast, it's just how the body adapts..

whatever the stimulus, or lack thereof, the body will adapt accordingly..

God I love that post, this is one of the biggest issues holding people back right now and that hit the nail right on the head!

+1. Wish I'd learned that two years ago. Fuck you, Tony Gentilcore.

nice backflip! when you get the technique right it will be much easier!
Nothing makes abs as sore as your first day backflipping all the time!

standing full is just technique! try to do some whipbacks and when you can do them standing full shouldnt be a problem. standing arabian is also very easy!

whipbacks @ 0:32 and arabian (with scoot setup) @ 1:52

He said that he never did his lifts explosively and that he put on slow-twitch muscles, hence the lack of pop in his jumps.

Nope, you can't do that. The fibers with most growth potential are the fast twitch fibers and even if you lift slow, your fast twitch fibers are used.

Train to be explosive, get high reactivity and RFD and get really strong = high jump!

i really found it interesting that at some point just max strength squatting will make you slower if you don't incorporate any explosive work or jumps

John Kiefer has some good articles about that topic
http://articles.elitefts.com/author/john-kiefer/
http://dangerouslyhardcore.com/

This article of John Berardi shows how it works
http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/nutrition/new_view.htm

staying low calorie/low carb until workout and then high calorie/"high" carb in the PWOperiod works great for me to add muscle and maintain or lose bodyfat

Injury, Prehab, & Rehab talk for the brittlebros / Re: Stretch to Win
« on: November 26, 2010, 06:26:16 pm »
i got that book about a year ago and its still the best book about flexibility that ive read!
Kurz and some (supposed to be good) german books by far arent as detailed as Stretch To Win. They also mention the connection of fascia and different fascial lines and how a problem somewhere can affect some other place on that fascial line.

Actually DeFranco is a certified Stretch To Win Trainer. You can see him use the special bench with straps to stretch in the DeFrancos Training Compilation.

thx adarqui!

no, i havent gotten it checked out because at first i thought i just needed some rest. i think i know what the problem is, so i can work on it.
do i just have to start a progress journal and post all the information to get help on program design?

@zetz: what helped me the most was eating, heavy lifting, eating and then some eating! Im a protein type, so i gained best with lots of protein and fat and just some carbs after my workouts. if theres one important thing i could tell you its: dont stuff yourself all the time! you should try to have high insulin sensitivity, so the nutrients you take in are used for building muscle. there was a time when i ate 5000kcal every day without gaining any weight. during the 3 weeks of smolov jr i ate about 3000-4000kcal and gained about 5lb.
for tricking you can check out http://www.tricksession.com/forums/

Introduce Yourself / Hey!
« on: November 25, 2010, 07:25:11 pm »
hello guys, hello Andrew,

I'm Damien, 22 years old, from Germany and i'm a Trickster.
I am 6'2 and currently i weigh 187lb. Before i started weightlifting and eating big i was about 140lb at 6`2...
I've been tricking for 6 years now and the first years i had a really hard time to land most tricks because i was just too weak. I started lifting about 2-3 years ago. First 1-2 years were almost wasted with bodybuilding routines and bad nutritional habits. When i first started lifting i squatted and benched with 70lb and deadlifted 100lb. My standing vertical was always very low.
Now my standing vertical is about 27inches, my 1RM deadlift is 405lb, bench 210lb and my squat was 300lb before i started Smolov Jr, which i completed last week. On my last Smolov Jr workout i squatted 95% of my previous 1RM for 10 sets of 3 reps. I'll test my new max in 2 days...
Since i started lifting i became very interested in everything about exercise science, functional anatomy and everything else related with performance. Next year i want to study Sports & Performance at the university of Cologne, Germany (in case someone knows it - its supposed to be one of europes leading sport-universities).

I've been dealing with lower leg pain on my left leg for about 6 months now. I think it first started as shin splints, but now its more of an ankle/wrong posture or alignment problem...

My biggest weakness is my lack of reactivity, my RFD and for bodyparts its my hamstring-strength and thoracic spine mobility.

Damn, that's a long text with the intention to just say hi!

here is a video of myself (the tallest one with no/short hair) and my team tricking:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkKkOL8pa_M

my personal youtubechannel is http://www.youtube.com/user/DamienStrength?feature=mhum. There are some older lifting videos. I totally changed my squat technique to an closer stance, more oly style.

greetings from Germany,
Damien
