Anyway, an exhausting workout but full of PRs again. Being a noob runner is cool, so easy and fast to improve!

yup! and being intermediate/advanced, harder to improve but SO MUCH stuff to improve. the amount of stuff you can attack/try to PR is endless.

Dick Beardsley was a damn beast.

https://deadspin.com/what-was-so-special-about-dick-beardsley-1771327930

he liked to race every weekend.. my kind of guy!

Quote
He ran everything near the red line, the prevailing philosophy being to go as hard as you could. If you blew up, you blew up. There was another race next weekend.

damn CLE got owned.

don't expect that to happen in game 2 but, given how solid CLE was playing in TOR, major win for BOS, so dominant.

looked for the 1982 Boston Marathon, full race.. can't find it. Meanwhile, pretty much every New York City Marathon has a full race video, here's 1981:

see the pouty kid in the purple shirt with his mom behind him?

this stuff happens alot.. someone mentions her kid being up front, she says: "if he doesn't start up front he's going to be so angry at me". Then he goes in front of me. I tell her: "it's not safe for him to start up front", she gives me this look and is like "don't worry, he'll be fine". Then I say, "ok maybe he'll be fine but someone could get hurt trying to avoid running him over" .. no response. So anyway, I tell her "ok i'll start somewhere else, don't want to run over your child". Saw the kid as I was running back on the 2nd half of the 5k.. he wasn't even running it. He was just walking with this angry face, as if he was mad he couldn't win the race. I've seen this stuff alot, it's bad parenting. They need to give their children the rules of the game.. If this was some little phenom, who can fly, then it'd make some sense.

dno, I think the photo says it all though.

I guess you can compare it to the shirtless kid a few people over to his right .. that kid looks ready, and he's fast. Plus he's older.

race directors/event organizers do a terrible job at enforcing this stuff.

thanks adarq! didn't go quite as well as i'd hoped but i'm so happy right now. just proud of myself for following through under the circumstances.

- warm up slow jog 1.5 km, strides

- race 5k in 20:49 (watch)

- cool down slow jog 1 km

- stretch

weather was good: overcast and mid-60s although very humid. it rained all night and stopped just in time for the sign-in period to start. smallish race, i'd guess around 100 or maybe 150 people, and i started right at the front. i went out much too fast, 3:39 for the first kilometer, although the leaders shot out in front and i did not try to keep up. faster race than last year. course was hilly the entire time, very few flat stretches. second km was 4:07, then 4:11, then 4:22 and 4:22. managed a wee little kick for the last 50-75m but i had a headache for the final 1+ km. that was a bit of a drag. the winner finished in 18:24, i think i was fifth or sixth.

disappointed that i didn't go faster but i didn't hold back much. need to figure out what to do to avoid headache because in retrospect my legs had more to give, especially in the last km. what a great learning experience, felt very happy as soon as i'd cooled down and was hurting less.

awesome. seems like it went pretty well though, especially given the humidity and course, that's a solid time. 5th or 6th, dope!!! congrats!! great that you feel so happy about it afterwards.

really sucks about the headache though.. i feel similar when I cramp, just really bums me out.

I got owned by the humidity today too. it's rough.

how'd your mom do? she ran it too right?

have fun & have a great race!

damn forgot to check that ^^ will do now.

also, crazy stuff with Ryan Shay's death, myocarditis, caused by a virus: (happened in like 2008)

"When you look at those muscle cells, you don't see normal, neatly stacked cells like the bricks in a brick wall. Instead, you see swirling, disoriented cells. This sounds more like viral myocarditis resulting from scars that were left by a virus. What happens is, the heart sends out a typical electrical impulse, but it hits scar tissue and then circles around or bounces back through the heart, which we call 'circus arrhythmia.' If this develops into a ventricular arrhythmia, it's very dangerous, and can cause sudden death."
