ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / Re: VJ hang snatch variation form check
« on: January 02, 2013, 02:24:20 pm »
I took a couple vids from today's workout, 1 set on a max attempt 145lbs and 1 cluster set with 135lbs total of 7 reps.

Basically I'm applying Thibadaeu's HDL layering system to the hang snatch where there's a ramp to a training max, then 3 sets of clusters 3-7 reps

What do you think of form and speed for the max? I think it's slightly slower but does that matter since it was sort of a max?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxACURz3Rrk

This set seems ok to me, however I feel I should stay on 135lbs awhile to work on the explosiveness.

Any thoughts?

Yeah 135 was pretty much the same, it wasn't sloppy form or anything and pretty much same speed. I knew I could do 135, the most I've ever done was 145 but the form was pretty sloppy. The day after the workout my glutes, traps, biceps, and forearms can barely move their so sore!! Lol.. Thanks for the input

How do you know you are a hip dominant jumper?

I think it's more of a crossfit fettish. Everyone in crossfit at the military gyms have vibrams on when doing their WODs. I had a pair of vibrams also, loved em! Did everything in them. Squats, jumps, sprints, Physical training tests such as the 1.5 mile run. I never had any foot problems in them except for two things. When I ran the 1.5 miles my calves and ankles were sore for 3 days. I was also always shooting ball in them just to shoot around and a couple of times was asked to play pick up on full court. So I played full court in them as well. Left blisters on my feet. It was funny to think that I was killing those 3 back to back games I played in them and even dunked on someone in them in the main game. I stopped wearing them bc I wore them out and they developed holes in between the toes. I didn't develop any kind of foot pain with them or anything but some people do so be careful if you get them. Now I play in the waffle racers, and soon the new Kobe system 8's I just ordered.

Hope that helps, to me the best surface for them is grass or turf and carpet.

This is LaMarshall Corbett, he was my high school teammate back in the day. He plays overseas now. He is a tremendous athlete, all I remember from him in high school was that he could touch the top of the square of one foot and two and the football coach recorded him at a 4.3 40ty. Had offers from nc state football, and plenty of D 1 basketball schools like UNC, but didn't care about his grades and slept in class so he went D2. He's trying to get in the NBA now always having workouts, I know he was trying out for the bobcats last year.

The funny thing is both his sister and his cousin had the biggest crush on me, so that still makes me laugh till this day. But anyway all I remember was he hated the weight room especially squats. But his explosive ability and quickness was out standing, he had a signature crossover and a fadeaway that would make anyone fall. So we called him Lil' Kobe. These pics were taken from his Facebook. I knew him since my 8th grade gym class, I hope he makes it to the league, which I believe he will eventually.

I found this article online from my home town newspaper

Corbett excels after BYHS

LaMarshall Corbett, a former Bartlett Yancey Buccaneer, had a great basketball season overseas in Poland.
He played shooting guard for Siarka Jezior Tarnobrzeg (2011-2012). He parted ways with Siarka after a knee injury his last game of the season.
LaMarshall is the son of Marshall and Alfreda Corbett and the brother of Calandra Corbett, who resides in Reidsville. He is married to Felisha Daniel-Corbett and they have an eight-month old son Avanti' who resides in Poland with him.
LaMarshall, a 2007 graduate of Barlett Yancey, led the conference in scoring and free throw percentage his senior year. He earned All-Conference honors in basketball, track and football, and was team captain, MVP and Athlete of the Year as a senior.
He was fortunate enough to have his name added to the honors board in Bartlett Yancey's gym lobby for scoring 1,504 points and shooting 83 percent from free throw range.

He played two seasons at Kilgore College in Texas, where he averaged 15.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. He earned All-Conference honors and shot 49 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range.
LaMarshall transferred to Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. While at Angelo State he received numerous honors including: Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, All-Conference first team, All-District first team, All-Region first team and All-American second team.
LaMarshall was the second player in school history to make the All-American Team. He led the league in scoring, and three-point shooting.
He finished second in the league in free-throw shooting converting 90.6 percent of his attempts. He broke a school record for free throws made in a game sinking in (19) out of (20), record was 18 free throws made.

He also set a school record in free-throws made (203) and attempted (224) record was (165) made and attempted (205).
At mid-season he started training for the Professional League. LaMarshall played in an exposure camp the past summer in Las Vegas, where he was awarded Top Rookie of the HSM Camp. He also played in an exposure came in Houston, Texas. He was invited to training camps with the Houston Rockets and Charlotte Bobcats. He was in the process of going to training camp with the Washington Wizards when the NBA entered the lockout and the training seession was put on hold. Now that the lockout is over, he has been invited to do some training sessions this summer with a few NBA teams.

Even though LaMarshall enjoyed playing basketball in Poland and had a great season, his dream is to one day play NBA baskeball.
He finished the season fifth in scoring averaging 16.5 points per game and second player in the country. He finished second in the slam contest at the All Star Game. LaMarshall has been awarded plaques for best three-point shooter and top basketball player in Poland.
Now that the lockout is over LaMarshall is keeping his faith and hopes to be playing in the NBA soon.
"I owe all my success, ability and glory to God, my parents who have been my biggest supporters, my family and friends for their prayers in keeping me strong." LaMarshall said. "Having my wife and son in Poland with me makes life easier."

just do ALOT of ab and core work outs and you will be more explosive and will jump higher but you need to just jump more then you do abs just to train your legs· in reply to afromaniatiko

A little lower:

Hey man. I'm the same height as you and I wanted to know how you increased your vertical jump. Right now I can grab the rim and I just need better jump technique and explosion/a little more strength

austin murphy 1 day ago
@montanoemmanuel I just jump a lot and do a lot of ab workouts like crunches/situps and those core workouts is was increases explosion more then anything and just practice jumping ALL the time!!

Same old story , so sad! He does say he squats 410 in the same comments page , but he doesn't reply how often he squats.

I was hooping at the YMCA last Wednesday, and between games me and this fellow dunker was chatting and I told him it was my main goal to jump high and hit my head on the rim. I told him I was going to squat and calve raise my way up there, and his reply was to do core and work my lower back via back extensions for explosiveness. I just smiled and shook my head, he was also a natural athlete 30 years 6'4 230 and could two hand tomahawk from vertical stand still... On a side note I do like working core and doing back extensions just not for jumping higher.

ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / VJ hang snatch variation form check
« on: December 23, 2012, 01:55:13 pm »
This is my first time doing hang snatches in about a year and I really never got my form on camera or paid attention to it. This was me trying your(Lance) VJ specific hang snatch today in my workout.

I recorded a set of clusters I did with 115lbs with 10 seconds in between reps. I also ramped up to 135lbs for a single (not shown)

Is the form descent? Anything I should change? Thanks in advance man

You don't have to watch the whole video lol, just what do you think of the first 2 or 3

I always thought for the average person it's usually 4-6 inches and the correlation never really changes much. Raptor do you know any good reactive tests for calve or glute strength?

Yeah because in a half squat workout you'll use a ligther weight. Oh wait...

No, but in a full squat lighter weight is used, and in a half 20 rep breathing squat lighter weight is used

This compared to two half squat days with heavier weight

And why are you waiting

I think I'm going to have a half squat session one day and a full squat session the other day to also help save lower back stress.. I think these will complement each other well

Nice work man. For the lower back weakness, you could do a few things. Personally I would try more reps at lower weight for awhile before you try 325 again, and/or core stabilisation exercises (planking and glute bridges etc). Keep it up!

Thanks, yeah I was thinking going back to working up to a max like I did then do a set of 20 rep breathing squats at a lighter weight. I remember those helped strengthen my back alot. I also might incorporate good mornings. I appreciate the advice
