Crazy Weird Analysis & Stuff :) / Re: GALLERIES: Hopping Exercises
« on: March 08, 2010, 03:24:11 am »
i forgot about this vid, this is just insane, i get like 2 inches on my pogo jumps.  is that just crazy ankle stiffness and some long ass achilles tendons?

well his long achilles definitely has alot to do with him getting as high as he's getting, but, the stiffness/eccentric RFD is mostly ocurring in the quads/calfs, with less but still significant contribution from the glutes/hams.

if it were a stiff leg ankle hop, then ya, calfs/achilles would contribute even more, because the legs would be locked at impact..

it's pretty much, in this order, for pogo's:
  • calfs/achilles + quads
  • glutes
  • hamstrings

for stiff leg ankle hops it would be:
  • calfs/achilles
  • quads
  • glutes
  • hamstrings

also contributing is his leanness & mastery of the movement. his arm timing/shoulder power/body position/everything is perfect.

Quote
are you supposed to dorsiflex feet when doing the pogo jumps?

ya, always.. with pretty much every reactive movement you should be dorsiflexing to pre-load the calfs. This also locks the ankle, which means less energy lost to instability/collapsing.

how high do you think he's getting on those?
[/quote]

definitely 35 on those.. they are the most impressive pogo's i've seen online.

would love to see more stiff leg ankle hop / pogo vids :)

peace!

1. 2008: Phytoecdysteroids Increase Protein Synthesis in Skeletal Muscle Cells

Quote
Phytoecdysteroids, which are structurally similar or identical to insect molting hormones, produce a range of effects in mammals, including increasing growth and physical performance. To study the mechanism of action of phytoecdysteroids in mammalian tissue, an in vitro cellular assay of protein synthesis was developed. In C2C12 murine myotubes and human primary myotubes, phytoecdysteroids increased protein synthesis by up to 20%. In vivo, ecdysteroids increased rat grip strength.

Quote
• An increase of protein synthesis (for body-building, AIDS, patients with neoplasm disease, etc.), and other body functions * Antidepressant effect; • Shielding the body from stress, and improve the physical and sexual performance; • Prevention from infections and certain diseases. A list of recent offers of ecdysteroid-containing products will also be given. The perspective use of ecdysteroids is promising in genetics. Steroid regulation of programmed cell death during development and differentiation has recently come to the limelight. Murine model of human diseases and its influencing with ecdysteroids are detailed.

3. 2008: Phytoecdysteroids and Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids - Structure and Effects on Humans

Quote
Ecdysteroids do not bind to the cytosolic steroid receptors, instead, they are likely to influence signal transduction pathways, like the anabolic steroids, possibly via membrane bound receptors.
The application of phytoecdysteroids is a promising alternative to the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids because of the apparent lack of adverse effects. The prospective use of phytoecdysteroids may extend to treatments of pathological conditions where anabolic steroids are routinely applied. One of the most cited aspects of phytoecdysteroid application (on the Internet) is the increase of muscle size. However in this field too stringent research is needed as an adequate cytological explanation is not yet available for the anabolic.

4. 20-Hydroxyecdysone increases fiber size in a muscle-specific fashion in rat

Quote
According to our results 20E may provide an alternative for substitution of anabolic–androgenic steroids in therapeutic treatments against muscle atrophy.

Results provide a plausible explanation for the antiosteoporotic effects of TC. Hence, TC as well as other Ecd producing plants or pure Ecd may be of value in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis which is of increasing importance due to aging and obesity among individuals.

8. [Effect of vitamin D3 and 20-hydroxyecdysone on the content of ATP, creatine phosphate, carnosine and Ca2+ in skeletal muscles]

Quote
The effect of vitamin D3, 20-hydroxyecdysone and extract from Serratula coronata containing 20-hydroxyecdysone on the level of basic metabolites in the skeletal muscles of rats has been studied. It was shown that development of D-hypovitaminosis is accompanied by the decrease in content of ATP, creatine phosphate, carnosine, and by the increase of Ca2+ content. Against the background of D-hypovitaminosis the 20-hydroxyecdysone and the extract from Serratula coronata which contains 20-hydroxyecdysone promote the increase of the amount of these metabolites up to the control of one and normalize Ca2+ content in them.

9. Effects of Methoxyisoflavone, Ecdysterone, and Sulfo-Polysaccharide Supplementation on Training Adaptations in Resistance-Trained Males

Quote
Results indicate that M, E, and CSP3 supplementation do not affect body composition or training adaptations nor do they influence the anabolic/catabolic hormone status or general markers of catabolism in resistance-trained males.

10. Human urinary excretion profiles after exposure to ecdysterone. (2008)

Quote
These data demonstrate that 20E and 2d, as well as an unidentified metabolite, are excreted in human urine for up to 48 h after administration. These data also indicate that consumption of a 20E-containing supplement does not alter endogenous urinary steroid profiles..

11. 20-Hydroxyecdysone decreases weight and hyperglycemia in a diet-induced obesity mice model

Quote
These studies demonstrate the anti-obesity and anti-diabetic effects of 20HE and begin to elucidate its putative cellular targets both in vitro and in vivo.

12. [A comparative study of the anabolic action of ecdysten, leveton and Prime Plus, preparations of plant origin]

Quote
All tested substances taken orally for three weeks diminished fat content under conditions of daily aerobic-anaerobic training. Ekdisten (ecdysten) and Prime Plus (combination of ekdisten and pure protein) elevated the muscle mass.

13. Metabolic effects of 20-OH-Ecdysone in ovariectomized rats

Quote
In conclusion Ecd has beneficial effects on fat and muscle tissue and may be able to prevent the metabolic syndrome and sarcopenia by a non-estrogenic mechanism.

14. From: Practical uses for ecdysteroids in mammals including humans

Quote
Ecdysteroids and physical performance
20E is claimed to have tonic properties (Abubakirov et al., 1988). Indeed it stimulates muscle growth, provided that protein supply is adequate. Such anabolic effects result in increased physical performance without training (Chermnykh et al., 1988). This was for instance demonstrated using the forced swimming test with rats: animals given ecdysteroids for one week were able to swim for significantly longer times (Azizov and Seifulla, 1998). These effects are similar to those of anabolic steroids. 20E is also able to increase muscle ATP content in vitamin D-deprived rats (Kholodova et al., 1997).

Quote
Ecdysteroids and growth (Table 2)
The anabolic effects of several phytoecdysteroids (20E, cyasterone, turkesterone, viticosterone E – see structures on Ecdybase) on mice or rats were reported long ago (see e.g. Okui et al., 1968; Syrov and Kurmukov, 1975a&b; 1976a–c, Syrov et al., 1978, 1981a; Stopka et al., 1999). Growth-promoting effects have also been more recently reported for pigs (Kratky et al., 1997) and Japanese quails (Koudela et al., 1995; Sláma et al., 1996). In many instances however, these effects are not spectacular when considering the growth (weight) curves as they are observed during certain phases of growth or for one sex only and, in many cases, adequate statistical analyses are lacking. Nevertheless, even small effects (i.e. <5 % increase) on growth could be of economical interest for nutritionists, but their firm establishment requires the use of large numbers of animals, which is hardly feasible with large mammals. The addition of E to sheep food increases body growth rate and also wool growth (Purser and Baker, 1994). Surprisingly, these effects were obtained with minute amounts of ecdysone (0.02 µg/kg per day!), and were more evident when animals were fed on a poor quality diet, which indicates that E improves food utilization. In this case, it has been suggested that the effect results from the toxicity of E towards rumen protozoa, but this has not been fully established. In fact, through a stimulation of protein synthesis (and/or a reduction of protein catabolism), ecdysteroids would increase the lean body mass. In pigs, doses of 0.2–0.4 mg/kg/day resulted in better nitrogen retention and a body weight increase of 112–116% relative to controls, while food consumption was lowered by 11–17% (Kratky et al., 1997). Other experiments used diets supplemented with ecdysteroid-containing plants (e.g. Rhaponticum carthamoides) and reported similar growth-promoting effects on pigs over a 30-day period (Selepcova et al., 1993b). In quails, 20E in the diet promoted increased growth (115% of controls), but this was associated with a decreased index of food conversion (Sláma et al., 1996). From these data, it appears difficult to draw general conclusions.

Quote
Ecdysteroids and protein synthesis
Stimulatory effects of ecdysone on protein synthesis were reported as early as 1963 (Burdette and Coda, 1963), and the discovery of phytoecdysteroids made these molecules available in large amounts for pharmacological assays. It was rapidly shown that ecdysteroids were able to stimulate protein synthesis in mouse liver (Okui et al., 1968; Otaka et al., 1968, 1969a&b). In fact, it was shown that 20E stimulates the incorporation of [14C]leucine in a cell-free translation system (rat liver polysomes), i.e. it increases the efficiency of the translational machinery (Syrov et al., 1978). Such conclusions have been confirmed and extended to other tissues, especially heart and muscles (Syrov et al., 1975a; Aizikov et al., 1978; Khimiko et al., 2000). Recent structure-activity studies (Syrov et al., 2001) as measured by a stimulation of [14C] aminoacid incorporation into proteins showed that among the compounds tested turkesterone was the most active, followed by cyasterone and 20E.

Quote
Ecdysteroids and glucose metabolism
It was shown early on (Table 3) that 20E given per os to rats reduces hyperglycaemia induced either by glucagon or by alloxan treatment (Matsuda et al., 1970; Uchiyama and Ogawa, 1970; Yoshida et al., 1971, Uchiyama and Yoshida, 1974). In fact, 20E stimulates the incorporation of glucose into glycogen and protein in mouse liver (Yoshida et al., 1971) and more generally it enhances glucose utilization by tissues (Syrov et al., 1997a). The mechanism involved seems to be an increase of tissue sensitivity to insulin (Kosovsky et al., 1989) and preparations containing phytoecdysteroids have been proposed as oral antidiabetics (Takahashi and Nishimoto, 1992; Yang et al., 2001). Depending on the extent of hyperglycaemia, phytoecdysteroid effects may be more or less pronounced that those of manilil, a widely used pharmacological molecule (Kutepova et al., 2001).

Quote
Ecdysteroids and lipid metabolism
Ecdysteroids display hypocholesterolaemic effects (Lupien et al., 1969; Mironova et al., 1982; Syrov et al., 1983), through a reduction of cholesterol biosynthesis and an increase of its catabolism (Uchiyama and Yoshida, 1974). 20E (5 mg/kg per os) stimulates the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids in rats (Syrov et al., 1986b), and such an effect is reminiscent of some oxysterols (Schroepfer, 2000). In connection with these effects, ecdysteroids may also have antiatherosclerotic actions (Matsuda et al., 1974; Syrov et al., 1983). Intraperitoneally injected 20E (0.5 mg/kg in rats) also enhances [14C]acetate incorporation into liver triglycerides and reduces triglyceride lipase activity (Catalán et al., 1985).

Quote
Ecdysteroids are not toxic to vertebrates: ecdysteroids have a very low toxicity (LD50 > 6g/kg), they are not hypertensive and, in spite of their anabolic action, they would have neither androgenic nor oestrogenic (or antioestrogenic) effects; they induce no virilisation and they do not induce significant changes in castrated animals (e.g. Prabhu and Nayar, 1974). All together this suggests that ecdysteroids are attractive compounds for a wide array of uses, which have been proposed, and of course it would be of particular interest to understand more precisely their mode(s) of action in mammals.

sup man, i looked at them a few times..

first vid, your legs look alot stronger, but your runups are shorter.

second vid, runups are longer, but legs look a bit weaker..

which vid are you jumping higher in? first?

combine that strength with a further runup, via practice or whatever, and these jumps should eclipse those.

what do you think ?

hamstrings/quad/left hipflexor feeling tight/sore.. sucked

worked out from 12:30am to 2:45am

jog to bball court on toes:
- off and on, 1.5 miles

LR DL RVJ:
- 124" touch for sure, pulled rim good

RL DL RVJ:
- 120" touch

L SLRVJ:
- ~122" touch
- had some good ones

R SLRVJ:
- got up a bit better, hit bottom of backboard

VJ:
- only did a few, boring

did mostly left leg SLRVJ's... those seem to be what hurt my ham tendon the most, unfortunately.

ankles felt alot stronger than last workout.

was going to do sprints but, hamstrings/quads just way too sore.. so I did lots of light SL bounds:

light SL bounds:
- about 20 sets each leg, god damn
- just walked down the sidewalk, recovering, then doing the SL bounds
- started off doing sets of 5 each leg, they felt so bad
- then they got stronger, got to 10
- then even stronger, got to 15-20 each leg
- then got tired, back down to 10

neutral grip pullups:
- 15, 12, 10
- feeling tired

poonanny squats:
- 115 @ 3 x 5
- this is definitely my limit on squatting on my toes.. i unrack the bar/walk out on my toes, with 115, i was struggling to keep balance and stay on my toes perfectly.. i ended up hitting my heel a few times just standing, or coming up from the squat..
- so goal is to volume this, get stronger at this weight, so that im able to completely control it
- squats felt good, lots of hamstring/quad

thats it.

damn.. sux that it made everything go haywire, but don't give in, the 31" fluid jumps were good.

just try and keep that stuff out of your mind until after you're done with the 1-2 step runups... literally give 3 step runups a "who gives a shit" mentality..

it's kind of like, when I would coach people on their ten yard dash. some people run it in 8 steps, their leg turnover looks like a machine gun, but they aren't going anywhere. So we work on bringing them down to 6 steps in the ten. Some people instantly run better 10 yard dash times, others get slower times. For the people who run slower times, it takes a few weeks and then they are fine, but initially they feel like crap.

peace man

Yes , it was just like that. And i knew it when it was happening too. I tried to empty my mind but couldnt.
Its ok , as i said i need to take a step back to improve runups.

ah..

Quote
Those fluid jumps felt so good. The idea of having them constantly is sick!

ya, nice.. feels so good when you get a nice powerful runup from 3-4 steps..

ahaha funny story about that dude.

He wanted to throw an NFL Combine Draft Party, you know, to kind of "make amends" with the interns. Show everyone he's not a dick.

So he gives us this flyer, it's like:

- NFL DRAFT PARTY @ PETE'S
- BRING YOUR OWN FOOD
- BRING YOUR OWN BEVERAGES/BEER
- the address blah blah

So we're all cracking up at this bring your own shit concept.. So, one of his fav interns, who I forgot to include earlier, so that's "5", wrote up a mock flyer, which had:

- BRING YOUR OWN COUCH
- BRING YOUR OWN BATHROOM
- BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER
- etc etc

So, she prints out like 30 of them and we taped them up EVERYWHERE. On the equipment, walls, office, etc.

So I come into PC that morning, and look at pete, and he looks at me and his face turns pitch red:

"DID YOU FUCKING DO IT TELL ME ILL KICK YOUR ASS"

So I break down laughing, "nah man but I know who did and aint telling you".

So he goes:

"TELL ME OR ILL FIRE EVERYONE"

So I'm just dying laughing, pretty much in tears, and this dude is steamed, and i'm like:

"OK OK... I'LL TELL YOU.................. SYKE!", and I left the office.

He comes out yelling, face is red like an apple, "I WILL FIND OUT WHO DID THIS AND THEY WILL PAY".

bahahahahahahahaahhahaha

So, hours go by, he's interrogating everyone, then his FAVORITE INTERN, walks up to him, in front of everyone, and admits she did it....... silence.... face goes from red to pale... and he basically tries brushing it off.

He loved to make fun of people's little "ticks", but when it got done to him he RAGED.

I'm cracking up just thinking about that shit.

ahahahah

OWNED.

He never got mad calling me "Powder" behind my back.. lolzlzlzozlzzozl.

why did you and pete not get along if you were doing an awesome job, and you said he was also brilliant, and he was getting the athletes crazy results

Well, he's pretty hot tempered, which isn't helped any by being in charge of the nfl combine prep, the facility, and the college/h.s./youth training. Being hot tempered and in control of all that, sometimes he'd be cool, sometimes he'd be a complete a$$. Mostly leaning toward the a$$ side, unfortunately. Being an intern I'd try and keep to myself & only vent with the other interns, but sometimes we'd get into it.

There were four interns in total, and he made a few interns "cry", let's leave it at that.. bahaha.. At times, it felt as if you were just an intern-slave, treated like trash. I've had a bunch of interns under me @ MSC, none of them will ever tell you that I made them feel like trash. So, I'm just not down with that. I'm pretty sure his internships & experience at IMG had an effect on how he treats his interns. He had some hard internships & realized becoming drill sergeant-like gets people to listen to him. Of the 4 interns, not one would deviate from this critique:

- Insanely knowledgable
- Insanely passionate about s&c
- If you ask questions, really gets into it
- Not cool to be around
- Has a GOD complex

We got into it a bunch of times, but the one that sealed the deal was this:

(this incident came after my first internship was done, just starting my second one)

He was on vacation, so I opened up PC on a sunday morning. I was the only person there, for some reason, so I was stuck with h.s. performance and something else (I forget), two conflicting groups. Massive-overload. But whatever I'm down, I'm a great multi-tasker when it comes to that crap, I can train h.s./m.s/college all at the same time it's nutty. So, the session has about 10 more minutes, you know, people are still doing their assistance lifts, finishing up, BUT, the next session is about to start. So, say 10 minutes left on this session, at 12pm, which is when the next group is supposed to start, but instead, since we're running 10 minutes late, it would start at 12:10.

So the secretary comes running out, "start the next group". I politely tell her we're going to be done at 12:10, so, 12:10 i'll start them. She throws a fit then leaves. Keep in mind, this next group, is the UNPAID athletes, meaning, ones who are about to sign up. This would be their first session, ie, performance testing, to get their initial numbers. She comes back out at 12:05 flipping out in front of everyone, even that group's parents, trying to make me look like a moron, so I got a bit loud with her, and basically said 12:10. So I'm finishing up, right before 12:10, she comes out once more flipping out beyond belief, so I said something I shouldn't have: "get the hell out of my face" (ya, not cool, no parents could hear it though, but not cool regardless). She goes back into the office, calls pete, tells him some asinine story. Meanwhile, the group at 12:10 starts just fine, everything goes fine etc.

Here's the problem I had with that scenario: Why would a group of athletes, who have already paid & have been working out for a while, have their session cut short by 10 minutes, giving priority to a group of people who havn't even been working out at the facility? THEY HAVE WORKOUTS TO FINISH. They paid alot of money (like ~$1000 for 32 sessions or something), I am not cutting shit short. I will give THEM priority. But nah, Pete came back, scolded me for it, said never to question her etc, so I was like:

"PEACE OUT MAYNE."

He told me I burned my bridges etc, wouldn't ever get a reference from him etc. I replied, "don't need your reference."

"ADIOS."

I'm not down with people who put the bottom-line before the athletes, I'd rather work at mcdonalds.

All those facilities or coaches who put the money before the athletes, can kiss my ass. It's about getting results, not creating an illusion of AMAZINGLY-AWESOME-TRAINING, getting that initial investment, then focusing on the next potential victims. When you have a big, insane looking facility, it's so ez to charge ALOT and get tons of clients. The look & feel of a place makes people automatically trust it & drop those $$.

whats a 10 3 touch for you equal in rvj?

maybe you should experiment with becoming a one leg running vertical jumper...would be interesting to see if you could get to 11 feet plus that way..plus i think it would be easier to dunk that way consistently..plus u could show raptor after all these years the RIGHT way to do it

ya as you saw, that's one of my goals now.. I'm going to try and PR LR, RL, L, and R.

lol @ the raptor comment, but ya that's a good challenge for me :)

I hit 128" on vertec single leg one time, back when my DLRVJ was around 129" or so... That put it in my head that I could get my SLRVJ up, so I trained it a bit and it went back to like 123-124", so I went back to pure LR-focus.

ya man I'd love to get my SLRVJ up, I actually think I can get it over 11 feet if I focus on it properly.

so ya, I want 126" touch off SVJ, 134" touches on LR & Left SLRVJ, ~130" touches on RL & right SLRVJ.

the only thing in my way is my hamstring-tendon-injury, which everyone will be reading alot about in this journal, because it's always on the verge if re-ripping, it seems... but I've managed through it before plenty of times, just have to be careful and stretch the hell out of my hamstrings.

6 March 2010

10' rim jumps.

BW@session : ~187

Weather was 9'celsium and rather strong wind, but its gonna get worse so took the chance.
Also calves were very sore from Friday. Weird soreness too , mostly at the upper part of calves.

Warmup = dynamic warmup + bunch of low-mid effort jumps

1x5 SVJs : 25,5 to 26,5

3x5 RVJs :
Big fail , thinking about runup ruined my session.
I was trying to do 2-3 max jumps ( 1 or 2 step runups ) and then 2-3 full runup jumps each set.
Weirdly , i couldnt get my normal max jumps... like someone deleted them from my mind.
My normal max aproach ( 1 or 2 steps ) felt like shit , i was geting 28'' to 29''.
My 3 steps approach felt like allways , a bit out of coordination and clumsy plant, geting 29'' to 30''.
I got 2 good full runup jumps that felt really fluid , i got easy 31+'' on those , and feeling i could do much better.

damn.. sux that it made everything go haywire, but don't give in, the 31" fluid jumps were good.

just try and keep that stuff out of your mind until after you're done with the 1-2 step runups... literally give 3 step runups a "who gives a shit" mentality..
