Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Re: Squat vs Deadlift.
« on: February 19, 2011, 06:55:53 pm »
Btw, if youre squatting deep enough, it is highly likely that your deadlift will go up along with your squat, if you only deadlift it is not as likely that your squat will go up in the same fashion.

Definitely, since a "good" deadlift is like a 1/4 squat, so it doesn't have as much (if any) carryover to a full squat as a full squat does to a deadlift.

The point is - could a deadlift and deadlift alone be used to gain muscle/strength (forget about jump specificity and all that, just pure muscle)?

Because, if it can, then you can just deadlift to gain muscle and do plyos to tweak and tune that muscle to act explosively.

For example, if you were to do depth jumps followed by deadlifts, then you'd get quad and calf stimuli by depth jumping, and also much more specificity than a squat for jumps, and deadlifts for the posterior chain as muscle growth stimuli.

It's simple: imagine your torso was 5 meters tall. Would a barbell BSS be easy?

The further away from your center of gravity or the point of control is a weight, the harder it is to control.

How do you define "toning"?

Good point. Wonder why he/she wasn't holding that pole over her head or on the shoulders.

I was about to say that's not really that impressive, I thought he had only one weight vest on, but 3? WTF? You can't know how much they weigh though...

its 305lb all.
just read the youtube description...

I did bss with a 230 lbs barbell, i think it's harder than using vests and dbs...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUmtj15rk9I < this is 220 lbs but i also did them with 230

imho barbell makes it easier because of the better weight distribution and therefore more balance ;)

Are you crazy boy? What's easier to stabilize, a weight close to the ground or a weight far away from the ground?

P90X is silly. If you want to become an athlete you better train like one!

I have the same problem. I do for example my first set of benches with 55 kg and do 10 reps. Then my 2nd set is around 5 reps after a 45s break.

ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / Re: LR vs RL plant for Dunking
« on: February 18, 2011, 06:23:48 pm »
My sincere advice is to have someone film you while you play. You can then observe what's your natural plant by looking how you plant when you jump for rebounds, blocked shots etc because you're acting on instinct there and not thinking about how to jump.

I agree with Zetz, you do look "bigger" than usual so to speak.

...ok I'll stop it...:P

I was planning on driving an Enzo, but if you say I should change my priorities then who am I to say "no"? :highfive:

* did singles and visualized the jumps.. and i noticed that i was leaning forward intentionally. if thats how i jump.. then its ok for me if my spinal erectors are getting involved.

If you lean forward you jump forward. If you have this tendency to bend at the waist and jump using a good morning instead of using your hips to extend, then you're possibly missing on a lot of inches in your jumps.

I do notice when I workout and my hands are a little sweaty I can grip the ball better. Good point.

Yeah I usually "wet" my palms when I go for a "scheduled" dunk with slippery balls. If you watch the NBA, you can see Steve Nash lick his finger tips from time to time, exactly for that purpose. I just blow some hot air into my palms for a few seconds and it does help (weird, I know). It doesn't help much though, if the ball is slippery then that's that, you can't do too much about it if you're actually playing ball with it.

Do you really think it's a strength thing? I'm willing to bet it's more a matter of skin quality vs. ball quality. I have some balls of different materials that I can palm, let go of them and catch in mid-air again, and others that I can't palm at all, no matter what, because they just are made of slippery materials or they have dust on them.

You can try to use some handball ball wax if you're not "afraid" of getting your hands dirty (and the ball for that matter) a bit. So basically, you can do that and practice your dunks with a ball with more grip ...

Ways to increase grip are just deadlifting (grip will increase because of the isometric hold of the bar), stuff like holding water blottles or kettelebell handles or even dumbbells only with the tip of your fingers for time, a few inches off the ground etc.
