i carried a water bottle on today's long run, ended up drinking the whole thing (500mL). it's an early version of this, with a simpler strap: https://hydrapak.com/products/skyflask%E2%84%A2-speed-500ml. i like the soft-plus-strap combo, the thing shrinks down as i drink and it's easy to maneuver around if i'm trying to tear open a gel.

yesterday

- treadmill 5k

-- 5k in 19:27 (i.e., treadmill set at 9.5 mph)
-- cool down

- climb x 30 mins

extremely happy and surprised with the 5k. going in my plan was to try to make it to two miles and then see if i was in good enough shape to hold on for the full distance. as it happened, HR never went above 170 and it felt below lactate threshold the whole time. i could have kept going. caveats apply for treadmill and also my fancy new shoes (sprang for a pair of asics metaspeed edge), but still. i was hoping to be able to run sub-20 and i cruised to it. confident i could run a sub-20 5k outside, although it might hurt more.

this means i need to adjust workout paces down 

ETA: steve magness now has a mirror on the floor with the stickers still on it, a small low shelf/clothing rail, and a round orange thing of indeterminate size and purpose behind him. the mystery continues.

it was dragging a little yesterday. back to normal today. how's the homestead?

suddenly warm, like 61F/16C. knees felt okay, legs a little dead feeling.

went out to do my long run this morning and posterior medial right knee immediately started clicking with a bit of pain. not severe but enough to make me stop a block from my house and turn around and walk home. felt obviously like something not to push through. very odd. gonna do a bit of research now and hopefully try again later today.

EDIT: knee was okay this evening, thank goodness.

full of energy, cruising. knee not 100% but no pain or discomfort. no clicking. wonder what that was this morning.

also, scrabble tournament report: i went 4-3 in my division, which was the lowest one. really should have gone 5-2 but lost to my dad for the first time in my memory. but can't be mad, since going in i thought he might be my only win, lol. i now have an official scrabble elo rating of 809, which is in range for a strong beginner. the tournament was a big success, more than 30 people came to play, everything went smoothly, and we raised around a thousand dollars for a charity that helped my family out when my brother was really sick. also, i won $20 for having the highest-scoring single word in my division (browser, for 102). all in all, a great day.

joined a friend who is better than me. i'm out of climbing shape for sure - hands soft and weak - but still had fun and surprised myself a bit. elbows a bit sore, need to be careful.

this morning

- run 48:09, 8.20 km

- run 1:10:18, 12.36 km
really nice day, ran up to a bouldering spot with a friend and a few other friends met us there with some gear.

- outdoor bouldering x ~2 hours
didn't do that much climbing, in the end, but it was fun to be outside. the grades definitely seemed sandbagged, hardest thing i did was V2 and would have been graded harder in the gym. also quite a bit scarier than in the gym, where you can at least see what every hold is supposed to be and the whole floor is bouncy. pads move around and they aren't that big.

ETA: also, i just discovered steve magness's youtube videos and i haven't been this excited about an online exercise nerd since i found lyle mcdonald 15+ years ago.
